Metal-In vs. Metal-Out ESD Shielding Bags: What's the Difference?

Either a metal-in construction or a metal-out structure is used in static shielding packaging bags. Metal-in or metal-out designs are now in metalized shielded packaging bags. The packaging of ESD-sensitive (ESDS) components is frequently done using the buried metal design. Metal-free shielding packaging bags also guard against harm caused by static electricity. The advantages of using metal in building are often determined by price and toughness. In comparison to metal-in ESD packaging bags, a metal layer closer to the exterior surface yields a lower resistive reading, which may be significant for particular applications.

The material used to create Static Shielding packaging Bags is a laminate structure which contains polyester, metal, and polyethylene, etc. Shielding from ESD discharge is provided by the polyester dielectric working with the metal layer. When grounded, electrostatic charges can be eliminated due to the exterior's static dissipative properties. That’s how it works.

A highly conductive outer layer on metal-out ESD shielding bags encourages a more rapid discharge in static fields, which causes the event that the metal layer must then try to reduce. The dissipative outer covering of metal-in shielding bags naturally dampens the discharge, reducing extremely harmful electrostatic events.  The conductivity of the real metal layer, not its placement in the bag, determines the layer's ability to shield.

Materials that provide discharge protection have a surface resistance of one kilohm or less when tested in accordance with standards, or a volume resistivity of one tenth of an ohm or less when tested in accordance with standards. Additionally, packaging materials with an adequate air gap between the package and the ESDS contents may offer effective shielding.
