What Sets an Anti-Static Bag Different from a Static Shielding Bag?

In both EPA-compliant and non-EPA environments, static shielding bags offer a comprehensive ESD protection method for the components inside the bag.

What Does the Term "Anti-Static" Mean? Are Pink and Blue Bags Safe for ESD?

The only thing that constitutes an anti-static material is one that won't produce triboelectric charges when in touch with insulators like cloth, hair, plastic packaging, or other insulators. In general, anti-static bags rely on an ESD coating to lower the likelihood of ESD incidents.

Typical anti-static pink, blue, and occasionally transparent bags are constructed of polyethylene with an ESD material outer layer. When minute quantities of carbon are deposited during the manufacturing process, these bags can occasionally also turn black. Only an EPA facility is safe for using pink or transparent anti-static bags (ESD protected area). It is unsafe to move a component within a pink, blue, or clear anti-static bag from an EPA location to a non-EPA region.

Only parts inside an EPA are ESD-safe in pink or blue anti-static bags (ESD protected areas). For shipment or transit outside of an ESD safe location, only static protected ESD bags offer protection. Never transport ESD-sensitive components in pink or blue anti-static bags!

Static dissipative materials that gently drain charge are provided by static dissipative ESD bags. These bags keep papers or documents in ESD zones without transmitting any charges from a zone that is not ESD safe.

Components shouldn't be placed in clear static dissipative bags since they might be damaged by an ESD shock without the protection of a faraday cage. Thus, only goods that are not ESD sensitive can be used safely using static dissipative bags. When buying transparent ESD bags, specifications should be documented precisely.
